Since 1982, Cross Roads House has provided emergency shelter and supportive services that make a profound impact in the lives of men, women, and children experiencing homelessness in the Greater Seacoast area.

Located in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Cross Roads House provides safe emergency and transitional shelter for families and individuals experiencing homelessness. As one of the largest homeless shelters in the state, we serve hundreds of people annually. We provide our residents with safe shelter, nutritious meals, basic needs, 24/7 on-site direct care staff, individualized case management, and the supportive services needed to find permanent housing.

Assistant Development Coordinator and Grant Writer

The right person will join a dynamic, progressive and forward looking non-profit and will work with the Director of Development and Communications and the Program Director at Cross Roads House to project manage the grant writing process. The ADC will research, identify and draft grant proposals, manage a grants calendar and keep track of various materials and deadlines. The grant writer must be highly organized, detail oriented and exceptional in written and oral communication

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

This job description shall include, but is not limited to, the following duties

  • Work directly with Director of Development and Communications on grant proposals.
  • Gain a solid understanding of the history, structure, objectives, programs and financial needs of the organization.
  • Continually research, identify, and maintain sources of public and private grant opportunities that align with Cross Road House’s prioritized vision.
  • Assist in drafting grant proposals and supporting documents based on the funding requirements, in collaboration with Director of Development and Communications and Program Director.
  • Assemble and submit materials to granting agency in a timely manner, meeting all agency guidelines/requirements, and complying with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensure quality, accuracy, and completeness of all submitted grant proposals.
  • Ensure Cross Roads meets reporting criteria and compliance for any grants funded.
  • Develop and maintain a master calendar and database of pending, existing, and past grants and contracts.
  • Assist with annual fundraising efforts acquired through government, foundation and private grants.
  • Maintain confidentiality around sensitive resident-specific data and financials of the organization.
  • Provide other administrative and development support for senior leadership as needed.

Skills and Abilities Required

  • Bachelor’s degree, from a regionally accredited higher education institution, in communications, English non-profit administration or another related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in identifying, applying for, and receiving grants from public and private sources.
  • Skillful interpersonal and communication abilities are essential, both written and verbal, for diverse audiences, including writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Top notch work ethic, with initiative and enthusiasm and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Enthusiastic ability to work collaboratively with and appreciate diverse team members and constituents.
  • Willing to “roll up your sleeves” to contribute when and where needed across the organization.

Front Desk Staff

Front Desk Staff assist in the daily operations of Cross Roads House in a professional and hospitable manner. Tasks include answering phones, greeting residents, volunteers, donors, and guests, responding to resident needs, overseeing resident tasks and chores, and working collaboratively with all shelter staff to provide safe emergency shelter and supportive services for people in our community who are experiencing homelessness. This position is part of a 24/7 onsite team. Nights, overnights, and weekends may be required.
