Cross Roads House is thrilled to announce that this year’s 17th Annual Benefit by the Sea, held May 4, 2019 at the Wentworth by the Sea Hotel, was our most successful fundraising event to date.
Due to the extraordinary generosity of event sponsors and a record number of guests who pledged their support, net proceeds from this year’s gala totaled more than $400,000. We offer our sincere thanks to all who donated and our 54 generous sponsors including our lead sponsors: the Bean Group, the Bobbett Family, The Provident Bank and Lex Scourby.

We continue to be inspired by the generosity of our supporters who believe, as we do, that to have a healthy, vibrant community, all our residents deserve a safe place to sleep inside. Our Benefit by the Sea gala has become our signature event and is a critical component of our fundraising plan. This year Cross Roads House must raise over $1 million in operating revenue from private donors. Even with the amazing outpouring of support for our Benefit by the Sea gala, Cross Roads House must still fundraise approximately $70,000 more before the end of our fiscal year on June 30, 2019 to meet our operating expenses.
During this year’s event, Richard “Chick” Hayden was honored for his 22 years of service on the Cross Roads House Board of Directors. After joining the board in 1996, Chick served as Board President in 2001. During his tenure, he was very involved in board governance and helped strengthened the board in preparation for our capital campaign in 2007. He and his wife Carol have generously supported Cross Roads House and our mission to break the cycle of homelessness for over two decades. Chick’s leadership, compassion and vision as a member of the Board of Directors was recognized by the 218 guests in attendance with a well-deserved standing ovation.
Additionally, Jay Schadler, local artist and two-time Emmy Award winning correspondent for ABC News, 20/20 and Good Morning America, spoke about his commitment to helping those in need in our community. Last year, when Schadler closed his downtown Portsmouth art gallery, he donated many pieces of his artwork to Cross Roads House.
Year after year, local businesses and community members have stepped up to help their neighbors in need by supporting Cross Roads House. We are so grateful for the sponsors and donors whose contributions to this year’s Benefit by the Sea will provide funding for critical shelter, food, and supportive services for homeless men, women, and children from Rockingham and Strafford Counties in NH and Southern York County, ME.
Last year Cross Roads House, a 100+ bed shelter located in Portsmouth, NH, provided 38,167 bed nights of shelter to 527 people including 31 families with 58 children. Volunteers prepared and served more than 23,000 evening meals. Cross Roads House is open and staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. A vast array of supportive services and programs are available onsite.
